What this tool does

Picks the part of a video you want and turns it into an animated GIF. You control the file size with the range, frames per second, size and number of colors.

Steps

  1. Upload a video.
  2. Play the preview to find the range, then set the start and end (seconds) with the "Use current position as start" and "Use current position as end" buttons or by typing.
  3. Set the frames per second and the width. The output size and approximate frame count are shown below.
  4. Set loop, max colors and dithering.
  5. Press "Convert to GIF", check the result and press "Download".

Settings

  • Start/End (sec): initially 0 to 5 seconds (or the video end if shorter). Values beyond the video length are set to the video end.
  • Frames per second: choose from 5, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20. Each frame is shown for 1000 divided by this value (milliseconds).
  • Width: the height follows from the video's ratio.
  • Loop, Max colors, Dithering: the same as in the GIF Maker.

How it works

It moves through the chosen range at the set interval, captures the picture at each moment at the output size as a frame, then calculates one color table and encodes a GIF. The frame count is (range length x frames per second) rounded down, at least 1.

Good to know

  • Sound is not included in the GIF.
  • The range you can convert at once is up to 60 seconds, and too many or too large frames exceed the memory limit and fail. Then reduce the range, frames per second or size.
  • Video formats the browser cannot play cannot be read.
  • The result file is named "videoname.gif".
  • Results are gone when you close the tab.
