What this tool does
Rotates an image or GIF in 90-degree steps or flips it horizontally or vertically. Use it to fix a photo taken sideways or to undo a mirror image.
Steps
- Upload an image or GIF.
- Rotate with "Left 90°", "Right 90°" or "180°" and flip with "Flip horizontal" or "Flip vertical". The result shows in the preview right away.
- If you pressed the wrong button, use "Reset transform" to return to the original.
- Choose the format and quality and press "Download". (A GIF is saved as a GIF)
Settings
- Rotations and flips accumulate in the order you press them. Four turns in the same direction return to the original.
- A 90-degree rotation swaps the width and height.
- Output format: PNG is lossless; JPG and WebP use the quality slider to control file size. For a GIF the format cannot be chosen.
How it works
Rotation and flipping are applied as a coordinate transform (a matrix) when the image is drawn on a canvas. Pixels are only moved, not recalculated, so 90-degree rotations lose no quality. A GIF is first decoded into full composited frames, the same transform is applied to each frame, and it is encoded to a GIF again.
Good to know
- A GIF with many frames or a large size takes time, and a very large one may exceed the memory limit.
- There is no free-angle rotation; only 90-degree steps are supported.
- A GIF does not keep the original loop count and is saved to loop forever.
- JPG does not support transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white.
