Remove Background
Pick the background color and similar colors become transparent. Works best for images with a solid background such as ID photos or product shots.
This is color-distance based. It works well on solid backgrounds and may be inaccurate on complex ones. Save as PNG, WebP or GIF to keep transparency.
For GIFs, the same effect is applied to every frame and saved as a GIF.
How to use
- Upload an image or GIF.
- Click the image to pick the background color and adjust the tolerance.
- Download as PNG/WebP to keep transparency.

What this tool does
Makes parts of an image that are close to the background color (a single color) transparent. It suits images with a single-color background such as ID photos and product photos. It calculates color distance.
Steps
- Upload an image or GIF. The most common color among the four corners is set as the background color automatically.
- Check in the preview that the background became transparent. If not, click a background spot on the image or pick the "Background color" yourself.
- Use "Tolerance" for the range of colors to remove and "Edge softness" for edge softness.
- Choose the "Removal range". If the subject contains the same color as the background, "Only background connected to the edges" is safer.
- Choose PNG or WebP to keep transparency and press "Download".
Settings
- Tolerance (0-100): colors whose difference from the background color is at or below this value become fully transparent. The default is 20.
- Edge softness (0-50): in the range beyond the tolerance, opacity rises gradually to soften the edge.
- Removal range: "Only background connected to the edges" removes only the area connected to the image edges. "Every matching color in the image" removes similar colors anywhere.
- Replace with a color instead of transparent: fills the removed area with the chosen color instead of making it transparent.
How it works
The RGB color distance between each pixel and the background color is calculated and converted to a 0-100 scale of the maximum distance. At or below the tolerance the alpha is 0 (transparent); from the tolerance up through the soften range, alpha rises in proportion to the distance. "Only background connected to the edges" starts from the edge pixels and spreads up, down, left and right to find the connected area, while the all mode checks every pixel. When filling with a color, the original color and the chosen color are mixed by the alpha ratio.
Good to know
- With a complex background or a subject similar in color to the background the result may be imprecise.
- JPG has no transparency so transparent areas are filled with the chosen color (white if none).
- A GIF gets the same settings on every frame and is saved as a GIF.
- Your work is gone when you close the tab.
